IRS Ends Tax Relief for Most New Jersey and New York Victims of Hurricane Sandy

gfThe IRS announced tax relief to individuals and business affected by Hurricane Sandy.  In IR 2013-16, the IRS announced that it was extending the Hurricane Sandy tax deadline relief until April 1, 2013 for Monmouth and Ocean counties NJ and Nassau, Queens, Richmond and Suffolk counties NY exclusively.  IR-2013-16 postponed various tax filing and payment deadlines from February 1, 2013 until April 1, 2013.

The IRS further announced that it would work with taxpayers outside of the above areas whose books, records or tax professionals are located within the areas affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Taxpayers will not have to contact the IRS to have their filing deadlines or payment due dates delayed, as long as they have a physical address in the above FEMA declared disaster zone. Any tax penalties for late payments or late filings will be abated.

Practically speaking, since October 26, 2012, NJ and NY taxpayers were left alone unless there was an IRS criminal tax investigation.  For IRS back tax collection matters and IRS audits, that meant a “no contact” policy from IRS Revenue Officers and Revenue Agents respectively.  Now other than the aforementioned areas, the IRS will resume its enforcement of the tax laws.
